Week 4 Term 2

When we have a few minutes to spare or the children have needed a movement break, the class has been learning some dance moves thanks to the Wii game Just Dance. We have some real groove's in 1B!

This week in HSIE we used the Thinking Routine Colour, Symbol, Image.  We read the story of The Little Refugee by Anh Do.  The children were asked to think about what colour they thought best represented the story, what symbol best sums up the story, and what image was the defining picture in the story.  The children worked in pairs and came up with some wonderful thinking.

The children were busy this week in Maths with lots of hands on activities learning about Capacity.

In THRASS this week, we played a new game that the students loved. Each child was given a THRASS card, and they had to form a group, or find a partner, and find a common link between their own card and that of another student.  For example, both cards might have had two syllables, or both cards had a diagraph in them.  The children had to explain to the rest of the class what they had worked out. There was wonderful problem solving and rich THRASS language being used in the classroom.  Thank you Mrs Maher for this suggestion, it worked a treat!

Other activities in literacy this week included making rhyming words, compound words and making predictions of spelling choices.

News presentations continue to be of a very high calibre.  Alvaro has put in a tremendous amount of effort into his 5 posters on how people read if they are either blind, Asian, Arabic or if you try to read hieroglyphics!  Come and have a look at these posters, they are hanging up in our room.

James telling us about Bastille Day.

June shared her favourite bed time story with us.

Noray gave us a very clear explanation of Flamenco dancing with a poster and a short excerpt from a movie with people dancing.  We found that Flamenco was about playing the guitar, clapping, singing and dancing.

Luigi showed us some interesting animals.

Xavier sharing his news.

Week 3 in 1B

Another great week of learning.  The students continue to teach us wonderful things through their symbaloo news.  It is great to see how creative the children have been with their presentations.

Xavier teaching us how to Yodel

Noray teaching us about Bastille Day

Emily

James on why we blow out candle at birthdays.

Luigi explaining how volcanoes work.

Victor explaining bed time stories.

Danielle showing us how to do origami.

June showing us how to make paper aeroplanes.

This week in maths we were working on our subtraction skills. Working in pairs, we used paddle-pop sticks to make groups of 10, and then did some big sums, eg 50 - 22; used 20 sided dice, and number lines to work on our skills.

This week in THRASS we found some more GCA's.  (Grapheme Catch All's).  These are the words that aren't on the THRASS chart, but still fit into the sound box on the chart.  For example 'm' sound in Autumn would be in the 'm' sound box, but it would need to be represented as 'mn'. The 'a' in China, would be in the 'u' sound box with 'bus and glove'
